TikTok and BookTok Roundup: Influencer Drama and Book Controversies

Viral online controversies across TikTok and BookTok have captured widespread attention, spanning dramatic influencer disputes, relationship fallout, and significant book industry developments. Among the widely discussed events is a micro-influencer named Destanee Brigman falsely accusing a jewelry brand called Club Coastal of racism and reneging on a brand deal.

While the initial complaints pointed toward unfair practices by the brand, further disclosures revealed that the influencer had requested free items, attempted to order nine pieces worth $900 instead of the agreed-upon three pieces worth $350, and later used a fake email address to leave one-star reviews while attempting to frame the brand’s owner, Kelly Bozigian.

Viral Controversies Involve Life Coaches and Podcast Hosts

Additional viral controversies captured online include an American life coach named Imani living in her car for several months to save up $40,000 to move to Jamaica for a long-distance relationship, alongside podcast host Ethan Klein allegedly cheating on his wife Hila with a 24-year-old employee. Meanwhile, Kikiva founder Kia Buckley faced backlash during a livestream when her sister Tez Buckley shouted a racial slur, after which Kia attempted to claim her sister was saying a different phrase.

Dating advice also drew massive viewership as a TikTok user named Shane posted tips advising women against using pictures of their successes on dating apps to avoid intimidating men, garnering over 34 million views. In contrast, many TikTok users discovered The Salon at Ulta, with Black women praising the corporate salons for offering better service, lower prices, and faster results than indie hair stylists.

Sally Rooney Pulls Books from United Kingdom Distribution

BookTok communities faced major disruptions as Irish author Sally Rooney and her publisher pulled her books from distribution in the United Kingdom. The decision followed the British government declaring Palestine Action—a pro-Palestine activist group with which Rooney is affiliated—a terrorist organization, making it illegal for her publisher to give her profits from UK book sales.

"What up, n—–s."

Further BookTok discussions centered on the TV adaptation of the fantasy series Fourth Wing casting its lead actors, which drew mixed reactions from readers upset over the lead actor being a person of color, disappointed by comparisons to AI-generated character images, or noting that the lead actress is Ewan McGregor’s daughter. Additionally, author Joyce Carol Oates angered romance readers by stating that artificial intelligence writing for romance novels makes practical sense because the genre’s writing is formulaic.
