The Slovenian rider secured 40 championship points with a fourth-overall finish at Afyonkarahisar despite mounting discomfort, but subsequent medical evaluations in Slovenia prompted him and the team to end his season early to prioritize recovery.
The decision leaves Gajser’s final standing in the 2024 FIM Motocross World Championship largely insulated from immediate threats. According to the official MXGP standings, Gajser sits in third place with 659 points, 40 points behind Kawasaki’s Romain Febvre in second. While fourth-placed Lucas Coenen sits further back on 566 points and has also exited the final stretch of races, fifth-placed Andrea Adamo trails Gajser by 100 points with a maximum of 120 points still available.
French Honda rider Tom Vialle, currently sixth with 545 points, remains a theoretical threat to overtake Gajser should he sweep the remaining events with strong performances. However, Yamaha Racing confirmed that team management fully supports Gajser’s choice to halt his campaign immediately rather than risk further physical damage.
Uncertainty surrounds Gajser’s participation in the upcoming Motocross of Nations (MXoN).
The championship standings heading into the final events are led by Honda’s Jeffrey Herlings with 855 points, followed by Romain Febvre with 699 points, and Tim Gajser with 659 points.
