Renze Klamer Faces Viewership Crisis on Late-Night Talk Show

Renze Klamer’s new late-night talk show on RTL is losing viewers rapidly, prompting television authority Tina Nijkamp to warn that the program has mere seconds left to turn its trajectory around, mediacourant.nl reported. The sharp decline places the presenter’s current format dangerously close to the performance of its failed predecessor, RTL Tonight.

The champagne bottles can stay in the refrigerator at RTL for now as the broadcaster confronts an eroding audience. Klamer stepped into the late-night slot to provide a fresh start after previous struggles in the time slot, but weekly averages demonstrate a steep downward curve that leaves little distance between the new show and the format it replaced.

Steep Viewership Declines Spark Urgent Warnings

Television analyst Tina Nijkamp sounded the alarm in her column for De Telegraaf, stating that RTL must intervene immediately if the program is to survive. Viewership figures dropped from a weekly average of 466,800 in the first week down to 337,600 by week seven. That represents a loss of nearly 28 percent of the audience in less than two months.

Nijkamp characterized the current metrics as gruesome and pointed out that the show now operates at the same troubled viewership level as RTL Tonight. She compared the situation to Talpa’s recent entertainment program Buzz, which was pulled from the schedule almost immediately after failing to attract an audience. According to Nijkamp, Klamer has only a microscopic chance left to salvage the slot through immediate and sharp editorial choices.

Editorial Overhaul and Guest List Adjustments Proposed

The core issue stems from content rather than the host alone, as the program attempts to cover too many disparate topics in a single broadcast. Nijkamp described the current format as neither fish nor fowl, pointing to crowded tables that dilute the focus of each episode. Her recommended structure limits broadcasts to three distinct subjects: political discussion featuring at least one active politician, a segment dedicated to media, entertainment, or social media, and one strong personal narrative, such as a recent appearance by football coach Robert Maaskant discussing the care of his parents.

Adjustments to the recurring guest roster also form part of the proposed turnaround. Nijkamp suggested that American affairs expert Tom van ’t Einde should stay home more often because his television appearances do not bring out the best in Klamer. Instead, she advocated for the return of Michiel Vos, whom she identified as a standout contributor from the previous late-night iteration.
