An 87-Year-Old Recovery After a Hip Fracture

An 87-year-old woman is preparing to return home to independent living weeks after suffering a hip fracture from a fall, NPO Radio 1 reported. Tineke Kreugel sustained the injury when she fell to the ground, prompting an emergency hospital admission and a subsequent stay at a rehabilitation center. The incident disrupted a lifestyle that previously featured complete independence in her own home, raising immediate questions for her family about her future care needs.

“I slammed to the ground. My hip hurt,” Tineke recounted the accident to NPO Radio 1. Following her admission to the rehabilitation facility, she developed delirium during her recovery. “I know you don’t see it, but I do,” she noted of the episode. Her son Joris captured the family’s reaction to the sudden shift in circumstances, pointing out that the fall forced an immediate reassessment of her living arrangements. “But now a new question arises: how independent can she still be? I discuss that with my brother, because my mother leaves a lot to us,” Joris stated.

Daily Routine and Future Outlook in Rehabilitation

During her weeks inside the rehabilitation center, Tineke maintained a routine centered around reading newspapers. When Joris asked her how she passed the time shortly before her discharge, she initially misstated her age. “Een beetje lezen, de krant. Ik ben al 88 jaar, of 89?” she asked. Joris corrected her, noting she is 87, to which she responded, “Weet je het zeker?”

When discussing her long-term future and the prospect of aging, Tineke expressed a pragmatic perspective to NPO Radio 1. “There won’t be much left, of course. But I’m not afraid of that. It has to be this way. As long as I can still function a little, I’m fine with it, but as soon as that is no longer the case, I don’t need to be here anymore,” she stated.

Tineke Maintains Optimism About Returning Home

The rehabilitation stay inverted traditional family roles, prompting Joris to remark during his reportage that their dynamic had shifted. “Vroeger waren wij het kind, nu lijkt het wel alsof jij het kind bent,” he observed, to which Tineke responded with lighthearted humor. Despite the medical complications and the adjustments ahead, she maintained an optimistic outlook regarding her imminent discharge.

“That’s a party. I’m really happy to go home,” Tineke said of her return. Asked what activity she plans to prioritize first upon walking through her front door, she offered a direct response: “Dancing.”
