Tinubu’s UK State Visit: A Modern Chapter in Nigeria-UK Relations
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commenced a historic two-day state visit to the United Kingdom, marking the first such visit by a Nigerian leader in nearly four decades. The visit, beginning on March 18, 2026, signals a renewed commitment to strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations.
Ceremonial Welcome at Windsor Castle
President Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu were warmly received by King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Windsor Castle on Wednesday. The ceremonial welcome included a guard of honour and a private meeting between the leaders. The Prince and Princess of Wales, Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, as well participated in the welcome.
State Banquet Highlights Partnership
A lavish state banquet was hosted by King Charles III in honour of President Tinubu at Windsor Castle. During the banquet, King Charles hailed the relationship between the UK and Nigeria as a “partnership of equals.” He acknowledged the historical complexities of the relationship, stating that whereas “chapters…have left painful marks,” the focus remains on a shared future. He also greeted the President and First Lady in Yoruba, saying “Ẹ kaabọ, ṣe daada ni?” which translates to “Welcome, trust you are good?”
President Tinubu, in turn, emphasized a shared vision of progress based on “mutual respect and common values.”
Strengthening Trade and Cultural Links
The visit comes as trade between the UK and Nigeria reaches a record high. London is actively seeking to bolster its position as a global hub for African business, with Nigerian companies expanding operations and creating jobs within the UK. The UK is home to a significant Nigerian diaspora of approximately 300,000 people, forming a “living bridge” between the two countries, as noted by King Charles.
Ramadan Observance
The state visit was adapted to accommodate President Tinubu’s observance of Ramadan. A formal lunch was not included in the schedule, demonstrating respect for his religious commitments.
A Renewed Chapter
Nigeria’s presidency has described the visit as signifying a “renewed chapter” in the relationship between the two countries, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing trade and strengthening diplomatic ties.
