Titanium’s Retreat: Why Apple and Samsung Are Moving Away From Titanium Phone Frames

Titanium was touted as the material of the future for smartphones. Apple’s introduction of it in the iPhone 15 Pro in 2023 was accompanied by significant fanfare, promising a revolution in phone design, durability, and weight reduction. Coupled with a premium aesthetic, titanium seemed to justify the high prices of flagship models. Yet, after just two years, the industry appears to be reconsidering titanium, with both Apple and Samsung scaling back its leverage in their latest devices.

A Brief History of Titanium in Mobile

The Nokia 8910 was the first mass-produced phone to feature a titanium frame, but it was followed by a long period of absence. The Essential Phone PH-1 attempted a revival in 2017, but again, titanium remained largely absent from smartphones for several years. Apple’s adoption of titanium in the iPhone 15 Pro, followed by Samsung, sparked renewed interest, but this trend has proven short-lived. The iPhone 17 Pro is set to return to aluminum, and the Galaxy S26 series does not feature titanium in its color options.

The Challenges of Titanium

While marketing positioned titanium as a superior material, the reality proved more complex. Titanium frames often weren’t entirely titanium; due to its poor thermal conductivity, aluminum was frequently used internally for heat dissipation, with titanium serving as an outer layer. This resulted in increased heating in some devices, a concern given the increasing power of mobile chipsets and the need for effective cooling.[1]

Manufacturing also presented significant hurdles. Machining titanium is expensive and requires specialized tools, leading to slower production, higher scrap rates, and increased costs. Coloring titanium is also more difficult than aluminum, requiring complex processes that are prone to imperfections, as evidenced by the issues with paint durability on the iPhone 15 Pro.

The Return to Aluminum

Samsung’s move away from titanium with the Galaxy S26 series mirrors Apple’s decision to revert to aluminum for the iPhone 17 Pro. Aluminum is easier to work with, cheaper to produce, dyes more effectively, and has a lower carbon footprint – aligning with Apple’s sustainability goals.[1]

Rising memory prices may have also influenced this decision. Manufacturers are actively seeking cost savings in phone design, and the titanium frame presented a clear opportunity to reduce expenses without significantly compromising overall quality.

Looking Ahead

Despite the excellent durability of titanium frames, the combination of complex manufacturing, high costs, and other drawbacks suggests that titanium may not be a long-term solution for smartphone construction. While it may reappear in niche or ultra-premium devices, it’s unlikely to become a widespread material in the near future. The industry’s return to aluminum reflects a pragmatic approach, prioritizing cost-effectiveness, manufacturability, and sustainability.
