Connecticut residents with Eversource Energy or United Illuminating could save roughly $30 a month on energy bills starting soon, according to the Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA). The authority approved decreased electric rates for Eversource and United Illuminating customers effective May 1, 2026, running through April 30, 2027. Eversource customers will see an average decrease of about $30 on their monthly bills, while United Illuminating residential customers could see a monthly decrease of about $34. The rate reduction stems from changes in components of the Rate Adjustment Mechanisms, part of the public benefits charge, according to PURA. Governor Ned Lamont attributed the rate decrease to restructuring utility arrearages and investments in nuclear power to offset fossil fuel price volatility. He stated the decision provides much-needed relief for residents and reflects the payoff of difficult but necessary decisions made over the past few years. PURA noted the approved rates may be adjusted effective September 1, 2026, based on a review of the previous calendar year’s actual revenues and approved expenses. An Eversource spokesperson cautioned that not all customers may see significant savings due to increased usage during summer months from air conditioning, and warned of potential increases next year despite the current reduction.
