Traveling Japan’s Shinkansen: A First-Class Experience from Osaka to Tokyo

For travelers in Japan, the Shinkansen (bullet train) offers a remarkably efficient and comfortable way to traverse the country. Recently, I experienced the Tokaido Shinkansen line, traveling from Osaka to Tokyo in Green Car (First Class). This review details the experience, from booking tickets to enjoying the amenities onboard.

Booking Shinkansen Tickets

Booking in advance is recommended, especially during peak travel seasons, to secure reserved seats. The smartEx App provides a convenient way to purchase tickets. After booking, a confirmation email contains a code needed to retrieve tickets within the app.

Boarding the Tokaido Shinkansen

Japan’s rail system is known for its punctuality, and efficiency. Despite a slight delay with transportation to Shin-Osaka Station, ample time remained to board the train and purchase snacks before departure. The train was the Tokaido Shinkansen Nozomi 32, departing Shin-Osaka at 3:45 PM and scheduled to arrive in Tokyo at 5:15 PM.

Green Car Amenities

Green Car seating offers a more spacious and comfortable experience compared to standard seating. Seats are arranged in a 2-2 configuration, providing ample legroom and a footrest. Seats featured plush fabric covers and manual recline controls, as well as automated seat recline and reading lights integrated into the headrest. Power outlets were also available.

Tray tables are provided in two sizes: a larger, fold-down table suitable for laptops, and a smaller table in the armrest for drinks and snacks.

Onboard Service

Green Car passengers have access to onboard ordering services. While the system can be somewhat difficult to navigate, it allows passengers to order drinks and snacks delivered to their seats. A moist towelette is provided with drink orders. Magazines are available in the seatback pocket.

The Journey

The journey from Osaka to Tokyo offers views of the Japanese countryside. The train features standard lavatories and smaller lavatories with urinals only. The trip was completed on schedule, arriving at Tokyo Station at 5:15 PM.

While the onboard ordering system could be improved, it doesn’t detract significantly from the overall experience.
