Tokito Oda Targets Gold at the Asian Para Games in Nagoya
World number one wheelchair tennis player Tokito Oda is aiming to display an overwhelming performance at the upcoming Asian Para Games, according to a report by Yomiuri Shimbun. The multi-sport event officially opens on October 18, and Japan’s wheelchair tennis team held an open training session on October 13 at Morinoki Tennis Club in Midori Ward, Nagoya, to fine-tune their preparations.
Oda, a 20-year-old native of Ichinomiya, Aichi Prefecture, who plays for Tokai Rika, told reporters during the session that he wants to show his absolute strength on the court. He enters the regional competition with his sights set firmly on securing the singles gold medal.
Preparation and Local Expectations for the World Number One
Oda achieved a historic milestone last year by winning the US Open and completing the career Grand Slam across all major tournaments and the Paralympic Games at just 19 years old. Although he missed out on the calendar-year Grand Slam after losing the US Open final in September, his focus has shifted entirely to defending his title at the Asian Para Games.
During the media appearance, Oda demonstrated powerful serves and precise groundstrokes while outlining his current form. He stated that his physical condition is exceptional and that he intends to leave everything on the court to highlight the competitive gap between himself and the field. When asked about playing in his home prefecture, Oda explained that he wants the tournament to serve as a catalyst for spreading the appeal of para sports and wheelchair tennis throughout Aichi, rather than simply securing a victory.
