Kerry’s Tomás Kennedy Rejects AFL Advances, Drawing Comparisons to Rising Mayo Star

Kerry footballer Tomás Kennedy has turned down the opportunity to join an Australian Rules Football (AFL) club, opting to remain with Gaelic football, according to comments made by former Kerry player Pat Spillane. This decision comes as several Irish players continue to be recruited by AFL teams, raising concerns about the drain of talent from Gaelic games.

AFL Interest and Kennedy’s Decision

Speaking at the announcement of Comfort Keepers as the official Community Impact Partner of the GAA/GPA, Spillane revealed that AFL scouts had approached Kennedy, but the young player declined their offer. “Tomás Kennedy, I realize the AFL guys were after him and he didn’t want to go out, I don’t know why, but he’s a serious talent,” Spillane stated. He further compared Kennedy to Mayo’s Kobe McDonald, who has agreed to join St Kilda later this year, describing Kennedy as being “in the Kobe department.”

Talent Drain Concerns

The situation highlights a growing trend of AFL clubs actively recruiting Irish players. Currently, four Kerry men – Mark O’Connor, Rob Monahan, Ben Murphy, and Cillian Burke – are contracted to AFL sides for 2026. Spillane expressed frustration over the lack of compensation for Gaelic clubs losing their players to the AFL. “I still think the AFL are robbing our crown jewels and getting away with it – and getting away with murder by not compensating clubs,” he said. “There has to be some form of compensation deal between the (GAA) club and the AFL, there has to be.”

McDonald’s Move to St Kilda

In contrast to Kennedy, Mayo’s Kobe McDonald has accepted a contract with St Kilda. Spillane suggested that wealthy supporters in Mayo could potentially offer McDonald a package to remain in Ireland, noting that similar arrangements may have occurred in Kerry in the past. “I know a lot of Kerry players have been approached and I would hazard a guess, but I’m not certain, but I would say they were given a good enough deal to stay at home, whether it was scholarships or whatever like that,” Spillane added.

Kerry’s Championship Prospects and Jim McGuinness’s Strategy

Despite the concerns over player departures, Spillane remains optimistic about Kerry’s chances in the upcoming championship, naming them, along with Donegal, as favorites to win Sam Maguire. He also pointed to the tactical acumen of Donegal manager Jim McGuinness, observing how McGuinness is strategically preparing his team for potential matchups against Kerry players. Spillane noted McGuinness’s utilize of Finbarr Roarty to mark key opposing players in League matches as an indication of his planning for the Championship.
