CBS and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo have mutually agreed to end their partnership following Romo’s arrest for operating while intoxicated (OWI) after a golf tournament this summer [1]. The decision came after Romo was cited for unsafe passing, OWI, and having open alcohol in his vehicle on July 23 [2]. CBS stated, “We thank Tony for his contributions over the past nine years and wish him the best moving forward” [3].
Jerry Jones Expresses Support for Romo
Jerry Jones, Romo’s former team owner and general manager, broke his silence on the situation, emphasizing his personal connection to Romo. “Tony is one of the most valued relationships that I have on a personal basis,” Jones said. “I love him, and I’m sorry that this has evolved this way this year because I enjoyed him so much in what he could bring to the NFL, and frankly, I was proud of him as a former Cowboy.” He added, “He’s just getting started. He really is. I say that with all sincerity. He’s just getting started, and he certainly has made some mistakes… He’s got great opportunity ahead of him. I don’t know of anyone, period, that has a better future for Tony Romo.”
Watt Remains as Replacement While Romo May Return
CBS confirmed that former NFL defensive player of the year J.J. Watt will remain as Romo’s replacement through the season. Romo, meanwhile, has resumed golfing and may return to sports media sooner than anticipated.
“He’s not only got great talent, but he’s a hell of a man,” Jones concluded, emphasizing his belief in Romo’s potential despite the recent setbacks.
