Sabah State Election 2023: A Surge in Candidates and What It Means
KOTA KINABALU, Nov 23 – The nomination on November 15th for the 17th Sabah State Election revealed a meaningful increase in candidates. A total of 596 individuals are competing for the 73 State Legislative Assembly seats, a jump from the 447 candidates in the 2020 election.
This surge has led to highly contested races. The Tulid seat sees the moast crowded field with 14 candidates. Close behind are 13-cornered fights in bandau, Tamparuli, Inanam, and Kapayan.Banggi and Moyog are experiencing 12-candidate battles, while Senallang and merotai have four candidates each.
While a large number of candidates theoretically demonstrates a vibrant democracy, it also raises questions about the political landscape in Sabah, known for its unique dynamics and frequent shifts.
Assoc Prof Datuk Dr Ramzah Dambul, CEO of the Institute for Development Studies (IDS) of Sabah, explained that the increase reflects the openness of the state’s democratic system, but also presents challenges. “Theoretically, more candidates mean voters have more choices,a hallmark of a healthy democracy. However, too many candidates can split the vote and confuse voters,” he told Bernama.
He also noted this phenomenon indicates dissatisfaction with established political parties, prompting individuals to run as independents or with smaller parties.
This year’s election features 24 political parties and 74 independent candidates, including those associated with the Black Wave movement, which advocates for specific political changes. “The participation of thes independent candidates and smaller parties shows a desire for new alternatives. Though, from a political strategy viewpoint, it can fragment reform votes, ultimately benefiting the ruling party,” dr. Ramzah added.
