Sarah J. McLaughlin-Olson, a 44-year-old Topeka school social worker, was killed on September 10, 2026, when a pickup truck struck her as she assisted motorists following a multi-vehicle crash on US-75 in Kansas, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol. The fatal collision occurred just before 4:30 p.m. less than a mile south of the SW 57th Street off-ramp on southbound US-75.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the sequence of events began when an initial wreck caused a Honda Civic to cross the grass median and come to a stop on the shoulder of the northbound lanes. Several motorists subsequently stopped to help, causing traffic to slow down in the area.
The driver of the Honda Civic, 41-year-old Amy Shots of Wakarusa, suffered critical injuries in the incident, according to state troopers.
The driver of the Ford F-350 was identified as an 18-year-old man from Iowa. Investigators confirmed that he and his three passengers escaped the collision uninjured.
Impact on the USD 437 School Community
McLaughlin-Olson worked as a school social worker at Pauline South Intermediate School within Unified School District 437. Taylor Dunham, principal of Pauline South, addressed families in a statement following the tragedy.
“She was a valued and beloved member of our school community for many years,” Dunham said in the message. “She will be remembered for her giving, positive, and supportive spirit towards students and families. Her passing is a tremendous loss to our school community.”
District administrators announced that students would learn of McLaughlin-Olson’s death on the morning of September 11. To support grieving students and staff, the district deployed additional mental health professionals and therapy dogs to the school site.
