Total Lunar Eclipse to Grace Skies on January 31, 2026

A total lunar eclipse will occur on January 31, 2026, offering a spectacular celestial display for observers in the right locations. During a total lunar eclipse, the earth passes between the Sun and the Moon, casting a shadow on the lunar surface and causing the Moon to appear reddish – a phenomenon often referred to as a “blood moon.”

Unlike solar eclipses, total lunar eclipses are safe to view with the naked eye. No special eye protection is needed, as the process does not cause eye damage. https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/

For those wanting a closer look, NASA recommends using binoculars or a telescope to observe details on the Moon’s surface during the eclipse. Photography enthusiasts can capture the event using a tripod and minimal lighting for a few seconds. https://www.nasa.gov/feature/how-to-photograph-a-lunar-eclipse

While the January 31, 2026 eclipse will be visible across North and South America, parts of Asia, and Australia, it will not be visible from Africa or Europe.

Indonesia is expected to have a particularly clear view of the eclipse. The next total lunar eclipse visible from Indonesia is currently predicted for August 2, 2027. https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/lunar/2026-january-31
