The New Psychiatric Hospital of the Tours university Hospital will officially open its doors on Tuesday, January 27th, on the Trousseau site, located between Chambray-lès-Tours and Saint-Avertin. The hospital boasts a total capacity of 170 beds distributed across 10 units, accommodating between 6 and 20 patients each. Six units will cater to adults, one to adolescents, one to the elderly, one specifically for autistic individuals, and a new unit dedicated to those suffering from addictions – expected to be operational by mid-March. Most rooms will be single occupancy, though some double rooms are available at staff request.

This new hospital marks a notable step for the Touraine hospital system, initiating the consolidation of services at the Trousseau site in preparation for the opening of the general hospital in 2029. Currently dispersed across locations like Bretonneau hospital and St-Cyr-sur-Loire, these units will now be centralized. However, consultations will remain at the Fontaines location, “to stay close to living spaces” and to avoid triggering anxiety in patients with previous negative hospital experiences.

The hospital features several new amenities and represents a substantial investment in mental healthcare for the region.

New Trousseau Psychiatric Hospital: A Focus on Patient Well-being and Modern Care

The new Trousseau psychiatric hospital is prioritizing patient comfort and effective care with several key features.A seemingly small detail – clocks displaying the current date in isolation rooms – highlights a focus on patient needs, as noted by lawyers who often request this for their clients. However, video surveillance will continue in these rooms despite ongoing debate surrounding the practice.

The average hospital stay is anticipated to last between three weeks and a month, according to CHU’s Director of Technical Services, Ivy Mouchel, and Head of the Psychiatry Department, Vincent Camus. During this time, patients will have access to a range of therapeutic activities, including art therapy workshops and a cafeteria. A dedicated garden space within the building will offer a peaceful habitat for visits with loved ones. Notably, the hospital grounds will be smoke-free, aiming to support patients in quitting smoking or preventing addiction.

New Psychiatric Hospital in tours: A Focus on Reduced restraint

The new psychiatric hospital (NHP) in Tours will begin a phased relocation of patients from the end of January to mid-February. A key objective of the move is to minimize the use of “coercive measures” – the most restrictive interventions for patients. The University Hospital (CHU) emphasizes that only approximately 10% of individuals receiving psychiatric care require hospitalization in a closed setting.

Notably, the new hospital will house a branch of the judicial court, ensuring oversight of the rights of patients deprived of their liberty.
