Block 612 Cleanup Clears Funeral Offerings in Bedok

Leftover perishable food and paper offerings left behind at a void deck following a funeral wake prompted cleaning works by a conservancy team. A resident named Nabeel photographed the mess at Block 612 Bedok Reservoir Road around 4 p.m. that afternoon, telling Stomp that a whole crab, a whole roasted chicken, a whole fish, cockles, and a roasted pig head remained on a red tray at the site hours after family members concluded the wake.

The Aljunied-Hougang Town Council disputed the timeline of abandonment, stating that its conservancy team inspected the void deck at approximately 2 p.m. on Oct. 20 and found the funeral tentage still in place with family members present. According to the town council, cleaning crews returned at 4:30 p.m. to remove the tentage, cardboard boxes, hell notes, and food items after the family departed.

Municipal Removal and Civic-Mindedness Concerns Raised by Residents

Nabeel told Stomp that he felt disappointed by what he termed a lack of consideration for shared community spaces, questioning why wake attendees failed to remind one another to clean up before leaving the void deck. The resident stated that he reported the leftover items directly to the town council after finding the offerings untouched for several hours.

The Aljunied-Hougang Town Council responded that it coordinates closely with service providers and bereaved families to restore common areas for public use swiftly. The council emphasized that cleanup operations balance the practical necessity of clearing public void decks with maintaining respect for the solemn nature of funeral rites. Conservancy workers completed the sanitization and removal of all remaining ritual items shortly after 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 20.
