Toyota Unleashes V8-Powered Supra for Australian Supercars Championship

In a surprising turn of events, Toyota has developed and debuted a V8-powered Supra, but not for the open market. This high-performance machine is exclusively designed for competition in the Australian Supercars Championship, beginning in February 2026.

A V8 Supra: An Unexpected Development

The prospect of a V8-powered Toyota Supra was once considered unlikely, especially with the end of production for the fourth-generation GR Supra and the discontinuation of the four-cylinder model. However, Toyota defied expectations by creating a track-only Supra powered by a robust 5.0-liter eight-cylinder engine borrowed from Lexus’ LC 500 sports coupe [CarBuzz].

This V8 Supra wasn’t a quick adaptation of the road-going model. Instead, it was developed from the ground up around the Supercars Championship’s new Gen3 chassis over an 18-month period [Carscoops]. To meet Supercars regulations, the engine displacement was increased to 5.2 liters while retaining the core 2UR-GSE V8 engine from the Lexus LC 500 and RC F.
