Singapore Traffic Police and the Land Transport Authority nabbed 18 individuals during a joint enforcement operation conducted on Aug 14, following a viral video showing officers chasing a group of cyclists along the West Coast Highway. According to the Singapore Police Force, the sweep across Jalan Anak Bukit and the West Coast Highway uncovered 26 separate offenses involving 17 cyclists and one personal mobility device user.

Viral West Coast Highway Chase Leads to Police Action

Public attention turned to the enforcement sweep after footage circulated online. According to a video posted to the Facebook page Beh Chia Lor on Aug 15 and additional clips shared on TikTok, two Traffic Police officers on motorcycles pursued a group of cyclists riding across three lanes near West Coast Park. A witness interviewed by Lianhe Zaobao stated that the incident began at around 1 a.m. on Aug. 15, noting that several teenagers ignored flashing lights and sirens, attempting to pedal faster rather than pull over. Two officers attempted to box in the group, eventually blocking five or six riders who realized they could not escape, as reported.

Specific Traffic Violations and Seizures

The joint operation targeted multiple infractions that threaten road safety. According to the Singapore Police Force statement issued on Aug. 23, authorities issued composition fines for 26 detected offenses. Thirteen cyclists were caught riding during hours of darkness without required front white lights or rear red lights and reflectors. Furthermore, 10 of the detained cyclists rode without protective helmets.

Officers also seized equipment during the operation. According to police records, a bicycle was confiscated after a rider was caught operating a fixed-gear bicycle on a public path without a working handbrake. Additionally, authorities seized a personal mobility device after discovering an individual riding a non-compliant device on a public path. Investigations into both seizures remain ongoing.

Regulatory Standards for Cyclists in Singapore

Land Transport Authority regulations mandate specific safety practices for all road users. According to LTA guidelines, cyclists must wear protective helmets while riding on roads and keep as far to the left as safely practicable, allowing faster traffic to pass. When traveling in groups, riders must maintain a maximum length of five cyclists in a single file or up to 10 cyclists when riding two abreast. The Singapore Police Force emphasized that authorities take a strict stance on safety violations and will continue partnering with the LTA to execute regular enforcement checks.
