Woman Set on Fire on Tram in Germany; Husband Arrested

A 46-year-old woman was critically injured after being set on fire on a tram in Gera, eastern Germany, on Sunday, March 16, 2025. Her husband, also 46, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after turning himself in to police on Monday, March 17, 2025.

What Happened?

The assailant poured a liquid over the woman whereas she was riding the tram and then ignited it. Passengers reacted quickly, pressing the emergency stop button, which opened the tram doors and allowed the attacker to flee. The tram driver immediately used a fire extinguisher to put out the flames .

Victim’s Condition and Response

The woman was airlifted to a hospital with life-threatening injuries . Police initially searched for the victim’s husband, considering him a potential danger to the public . He later turned himself in to police and was arrested .

Investigation and Motive

Authorities have not yet released information regarding a possible motive for the attack or the type of liquid used. The investigation is ongoing.
