Samsung’s TriFold Gamble Fails: Why the Triple-Screen Dream Died

For years, foldable phones have promised to replace both smartphones and tablets in a single device. While foldables have largely delivered on that promise, with a thriving market of top-tier smartphones, tri-fold smartphones represented a further leap – adding a second hinge to create a device resembling a full tablet. However, the tri-fold market is faltering and Samsung’s recent decision to phase out its Galaxy Z TriFold just months after its launch, and less than two months after its US release, signals a potential death knell for the format.

Tri-Folds Are Too Expensive for Mainstream Adoption

The primary obstacle to tri-fold success is price. The Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold launched at $2,899 in the US, with some early adopters reportedly paying as much as $4,399 . This price point is significantly higher than purchasing a Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra ($1,300) and a Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra ($1,200) – effectively providing the same functionality for less money.

The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design, the only other tri-fold phone to reach the market, is similarly priced. While originally priced around $2,800 (20,000 CNY) in China, acquiring one in the US costs significantly more. More Hinges, More Problems: Durability Concerns

Foldable phones already face scrutiny regarding durability. Adding a third hinge introduces additional complexity and potential failure points. Tri-fold designs rely on multiple precision hinge systems working in unison, often combining inward and outward folds. This complexity leads to increased wear and tear, a greater risk of mechanical failure, and higher repair costs.

As with standard foldables, screen replacements on tri-fold devices are expensive and difficult. Owners of the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design have even reported needing to travel to specialized locations, such as Mexico, for repairs, with the risk of further damage during the process.

The Justification for Tri-Folds Remains Unclear

While dual-fold devices have carved out a niche for productivity and entertainment, the added complexity of a tri-fold doesn’t necessarily translate to a compelling user experience. Dedicated tablets offer larger, uninterrupted displays, better app optimization, lower costs, and eliminate the fragility of hinges.

App support also remains a challenge. Finding applications optimized for the tri-fold form factor is currently limited. Although the situation may evolve, Samsung’s cancellation of the TriFold sets back the market, particularly in Western regions, as Huawei’s design hasn’t driven significant innovation.

Tri-Folds Push Engineering Boundaries

Despite the challenges, tri-fold phones represent significant engineering achievements. Samsung’s Galaxy Z TriFold, for example, weighed 309g and folded down to 13mm thick, demonstrating progress in miniaturization. While heavier than the iPhone 17 Pro Max (233g) and slightly heavier than the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate (298g), it’s a notable feat considering the inclusion of an additional screen. Honor’s Magic V6, weighing 219g, demonstrates that lighter designs are possible, but other manufacturers aren’t rushing to compete.
