Truck Rams Michigan Synagogue, Suspect Dead in Shootout Amid Rising Antisemitism
A man drove a vehicle into Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, on Thursday morning, resulting in a shootout with security personnel and the suspect’s death. The incident occurred at a synagogue that also houses a kindergarten with 140 students, prompting heightened concerns about rising antisemitism in the United States.
Details of the Attack
According to authorities, the suspect intentionally crashed a vehicle through the doors of Temple Israel, entering the building’s entrance hallway CNN reported. A fire broke out within the synagogue, and a security guard was injured by the vehicle. Security personnel then engaged the suspect, who was armed with a rifle, in a shootout. The suspect, identified as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Suspect Identified
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) identified the suspect as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a 41-year-classic man born in Lebanon who became a U.S. Citizen in 2016 CNN reported. Ghazali entered the U.S. In 2011 and applied for naturalization in 2015.
Response and Injuries
Following the shooting, law enforcement officers, wearing gas masks, searched the vehicle and discovered what appeared to be “chemical substances,” though details remain limited. Approximately 30 officers and firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation and transported to hospitals. Fortunately, none of the 140 children present at the synagogue’s kindergarten were injured. Temple Israel officials commended the teachers for their composure and hailed the security officers as heroes.

Temple Israel, located approximately 40 kilometers from downtown Detroit, is the largest Reform synagogue in the U.S., serving around 12,000 families according to the synagogue’s website. State Representative Noah Arbit, a member of the synagogue representing a district with a significant Jewish population, noted that the synagogue already had extensive security measures in place CNN reported.
