Trump Confirms Secret Plane Switch in Turkey Amid Iranian Threat

President Donald Trump secretly switched aircraft in Turkey last month using an alternate military plane and a catering truck as part of a high-security ruse prompted by an Iranian threat, according to a U.S. official and White House statements. The clandestine operation highlights the extraordinary security measures deployed around the American leader amid heightened geopolitical tensions.

The Clandestine Plane Swap in Turkey

The security maneuver unfolded during a presidential visit to Turkey last month. According to a U.S. official speaking to CNN and The Washington Post, President Trump boarded an alternate military plane while hidden inside a catering truck. The elaborate deception was designed to counter a specific assassination threat from Iran.

Addressing the security ploy, President Trump confirmed his reliance on security details during remarks reported by CNN. “I just follow what they’d like to do. So I go by Secret Service. And the military. They wanted me to go on a different flight, a different plane, equal safety, but they wanted me to do it, so I do it. I do what they say,” Trump stated. He added, “I guess there was a threat out there. I didn’t really ask too much about it. I get a lot of threats.”

Decoy Passengers and the Fleet Maneuver

Prior to the switch, President Trump had flown to Turkey on a new aircraft gifted by Qatar that was intended for use as Air Force One. However, officials announced during the trip that he would depart on an older presidential plane—a move initially reported as a routine security precaution.

That announcement served as subterfuge. After cameras captured Trump boarding the older aircraft, he secretly exited via the catering vehicle and transferred to a smaller Air Force C-32A. The Qatari-gifted plane, the older aircraft, and the C-32A all departed Turkey separately for the United Kingdom. Once in the UK, Trump boarded the Qatari-gifted plane to complete his journey home.

At least two Cabinet officials—Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent—remained aboard the older presidential aircraft that departed Turkey without the president, according to CNN. Reporters and staffers were also onboard the decoy aircraft, unaware of the operational switch.

Political Reactions and Congressional Scrutiny

The revelation of the secret flight adjustments has triggered debate among lawmakers regarding congressional oversight of presidential security and foreign policy risks. A Democratic national security aide noted that the Gang of Eight—the top lawmakers on Capitol Hill who oversee the intelligence community—was not briefed on the specific security episode prior to media reports.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized the administration’s handling of transparency regarding the operation. According to statements cited by CNN, Schumer argued that the incident underscores why Congress must reassert its constitutional authority, noting that lawmakers learned of serious threats through press reports rather than official channels.

White House spokesperson Steven Cheung defended the administration’s security protocols in a statement to CNN: “The new Air Force One is a state-of-the-art aircraft that has been fitted with high-level security protocols that ensure the safety of the President and his staff. As the President has said recently, there are many enemies of America who have their sights on him, and we use every tool at our disposal to address those threats.”
