Addressing the security ploy, President Trump confirmed his reliance on security details during remarks reported by CNN. “I just follow what they’d like to do. So I go by Secret Service. And the military. They wanted me to go on a different flight, a different plane, equal safety, but they wanted me to do it, so I do it. I do what they say,” Trump stated. He added, “I guess there was a threat out there. I didn’t really ask too much about it. I get a lot of threats.”
Decoy Passengers and the Fleet Maneuver
Prior to the switch, President Trump had flown to Turkey on a new aircraft gifted by Qatar that was intended for use as Air Force One. However, officials announced during the trip that he would depart on an older presidential plane—a move initially reported as a routine security precaution.
That announcement served as subterfuge. After cameras captured Trump boarding the older aircraft, he secretly exited via the catering vehicle and transferred to a smaller Air Force C-32A. The Qatari-gifted plane, the older aircraft, and the C-32A all departed Turkey separately for the United Kingdom. Once in the UK, Trump boarded the Qatari-gifted plane to complete his journey home.
At least two Cabinet officials—Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent—remained aboard the older presidential aircraft that departed Turkey without the president, according to CNN. Reporters and staffers were also onboard the decoy aircraft, unaware of the operational switch.
