Aqua 1 Foundation, a little-known entity claiming a base in the United Arab Emirates, injected $100 million into President Donald Trump’s World Liberty Financial crypto venture last month, according to a report by Reuters. The transaction makes the firm the largest publicly known investor in the digital asset business, funneling tens of millions of dollars directly into personal proceeds for the Trump family.
The $100 Million Mystery Investment
The investment, announced in late June, establishes Aqua 1 as a dominant financial backer of World Liberty Financial. According to calculations by Reuters, the Trump family receives 75% of all token proceeds from the platform. With the addition of the Aqua 1 capital, the Trump family has earned approximately $500 million from World Liberty Financial since the platform launched in the fall, based on Reuters calculations.
Corporate registries, digital profiles, and public records reveal virtually no verifiable information regarding the origin of Aqua 1’s capital or its founding partner, Dave Lee. Reuters reported that it could not locate a direct contact method for Lee. An Aqua 1 press release, distributed as sponsored content on Reuters.com, listed an email address for a media contact named Dora Lee. In response to inquiries, the company provided an unsigned statement asserting that it is backed by a group of long-term, mission-aligned partners led by Lee and a global web3 team, while declining to disclose additional information.
Regulatory Distance and Corporate Disconnections
Following the June 26 announcement, Aqua 1 stated that World Liberty Financial would support its launch of a separate fund aimed at boosting digital economy transformation in the Middle East, with listings planned in the Abu Dhabi Global Market financial center. However, when contacted by Reuters, the Abu Dhabi financial center stated via email that Aqua 1 is not registered, licensed, or affiliated with the hub in any capacity.
Representatives for Dubai-based market maker DWF Labs—which announced a $25 million token purchase in April led by Russian crypto entrepreneur Andrei Grachev—stated that their firm does not know Aqua 1 or Dave Lee. Abu Dhabi’s state-affiliated investment fund MGX and China-born investor Justin Sun, whose Tron company previously made a $75 million investment, did not respond to requests for comment regarding Aqua 1.
White House Response and Token Transparency
White House deputy press secretary Anna Kelly addressed questions regarding the enterprise in an emailed statement to Reuters. Kelly stated that while President Trump pursues a pro-crypto agenda, he has taken steps to insulate himself from his family’s gains. “President Trump is dedicated to making America the crypto capital of the world and revolutionizing our digital financial technology,” Kelly said, adding that his assets remain in a trust managed by his children and that there are no conflicts of interest.
World Liberty Financial and the Trump Organization did not respond to requests for comment from Reuters. The identities of nearly all major buyers of the platform’s $WLFI tokens remain obscured behind anonymous digital wallets, leaving the exact financial backing of the enterprise largely opaque outside of a few disclosed institutional players.
