Trump Envoys Kushner and Witkoff to Visit Moscow and Kyiv for Peace Talks

Diplomatic Timeline and Logistics

President Volodymyr Zelensky told his citizens that he spoke with Witkoff and Kushner on Monday to lock in the dates for their trip to Ukraine. According to TASS, citing unnamed sources, the visits are expected to take place on September 5 and 6.

Zelensky emphasized the importance of the U.S. remaining “actively involved” in the process. He further noted that while Ukraine has intensified drone attacks inside Russian territory, the Ukrainian government would ensure airspace safety for foreign diplomats traveling to Moscow.

Obstacles to a Peace Agreement

Despite the high-level diplomatic movement, a quick resolution remains unlikely due to the maximalist demands of the Kremlin.

Kyiv has rejected these conditions. The diplomatic push comes as Russia has intensified aerial campaigns. Since August 27, waves of jet-powered drones have targeted Kyiv, resulting in 53 deaths and 134 injuries across the city and region, as reported by CNN. Recent strikes have hit the central Kyiv headquarters of Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) and various industrial warehouses.

Broader Geopolitical Context

The efforts by Kushner and Witkoff to broker an end to the war have previously been overshadowed by the war in Iran, an area where both envoys have also been working toward a resolution, according to CNN.

Ukraine has responded to Russian aggression by targeting oil storage and refining facilities deep within Russian territory. Zelensky warned earlier this week that Russian airspace “will effectively be closing” due to the volume of Ukrainian drone activity, though he clarified this would not impede the arrival of the U.S. envoys.
