Petro Discusses Drug Trade, Venezuela with Trump in “Very positive” Talks
Colombian President Gustavo petro held “very positive” talks with former US President Donald Trump, despite their differing viewpoints, focusing on the fight against drug trafficking and the normalization of relations with Venezuela.
According to reports from the BBC and the Colombian presidential office, the conversation centered around a shared “love of freedom” and the potential for a “pact for freedom.” Petro reportedly provided Trump with “information and names of criminal structures” involved in the drug trade,positioning Colombia as a “strategic ally” in combating cartels.He also highlighted his government’s successes in seizing drugs from criminal organizations.
Petro also used the meeting to advocate for improved relations between the US and Venezuela, urging Trump to normalize ties with Caracas.This request comes after Petro condemned the alleged attempted abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolas maduro by US commandos in early January. Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, recently pleaded not guilty to drug trafficking charges in a New York court last month.
The meeting signals a potential shift in dialog between the two leaders, despite their historically contrasting political ideologies.
