President Trump’s Neck Rash: What’s Behind the Redness?
A noticeable red spot on President Donald Trump’s neck sparked online discussion on Monday, March 2, 2026, during a Medal of Honor ceremony at the White House. The White House has attributed the discoloration to a preventative skin treatment prescribed by his physician, Captain Sean Barbabella, DO.
What is the Treatment?
According to a statement released by Captain Sean Barbabella, President Trump is using “a exceptionally common cream” as a “preventative skin treatment” on the right side of his neck. The redness is expected to persist for a few weeks, as the treatment has been ongoing for one week.
The specific condition being treated and the name of the cream have not been disclosed. The White House has not yet responded to further inquiries regarding the details of the treatment.
Who is Captain Sean Barbabella?
Captain Sean Patrick Barbabella is a US Navy captain and osteopathic physician specializing in emergency and tactical medicine. He assumed the role of Physician to the President under Donald Trump in March 2025, marking the third consecutive time a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine has held the position.
Captain Barbabella has a distinguished military career, including deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, where he was injured by an improvised explosive device and awarded a Purple Heart in 2009. He also served as the division surgeon with the 2nd Marine Division in Afghanistan and was awarded the Legion of Merit in 2012. Prior to becoming Physician to the President, he commanded Naval Health Clinic Cherry Point from 2013 to 2025.
Other Health Considerations
The White House has previously addressed other visible health-related observations regarding President Trump. Frequent bruising on the back of his hands has been attributed to frequent handshaking. He also reportedly takes a higher-than-recommended daily dose of aspirin as part of a cardiovascular prevention regimen.
Captain Barbabella stated last year, following two exams at Walter Reed National Medical Center, that President Trump remains in “excellent overall health.”
