President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Tuesday directing the federal government to replace the term “artificial intelligence” with “Super Intelligence” and use the acronym “SI” across the executive branch. Announced following a White House summit with major technology executives, the directive applies to official correspondence, public communications, websites, reports, and policy documents, marking a formal rebranding effort designed to distance the technology from what the administration views as outdated terminology.
Executive Order Directs Federal Agencies to Adopt Super Intelligence
Under the signed executive order, all federal departments and agencies must stop acknowledging the terms “artificial intelligence” and “AI” in non-statutory materials to the maximum extent permitted by law. According to White House documents, the administration argues that modern systems do more than simply imitate or automate human intelligence. Instead, officials assert that current technologies amplify human ingenuity and unlock new forms of creativity.
The directive instructs the assistant to the president for science and technology to develop a formal federal definition of “Super Intelligence” and “SI” within 60 days. This process will evaluate whether existing statutory definitions of artificial intelligence require modification or expansion. The immediate mandate, however, does not require the government to rewrite previously issued regulations, historical documents, or active federal contracts.
White House Summit Yields Voluntary Accord
The executive order followed a private roundtable gathering at the White House where leading technology executives convened to discuss industry standards and governance. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., told reporters after the meeting that participants focused on striking a balance between advancing American technology and maintaining a competitive edge over international rivals like China.
During the summit, participants signed a document designated as the White House Accord on Super Intelligence. Trump described the agreement as “morally binding” for the executives involved, characterizing it as a unique set of voluntary commitments.
Federal Funding and Prior Policy Actions
The terminology shift builds on a series of administration actions aimed at positioning the United States as a global leader in advanced computing. Earlier federal initiatives include the $5 billion Genesis Mission, a national program designed to accelerate breakthroughs across science, medicine, energy, and manufacturing. In July 2025, the White House published America’s AI Action Plan, outlining more than 90 federal measures to expand infrastructure, followed by a National Super Intelligence Policy Framework introduced in March 2026.
Trump first previewed the rebranding push during an address at the United Nations General Assembly, telling international leaders that nations must focus on winning the superintelligence race. The administration maintains that replacing legacy terminology helps reject overreaching global governance schemes while emphasizing American innovation and economic potential.
