US President Donald Trump’s border representative, Tom Homan, has announced the withdrawal of all ICE immigration and border protection forces from Minnesota. The US state is less of a haven for criminals as a result of the deployment of federal authorities, Homan said at a press conference on Thursday. “I have suggested, and President Trump has agreed, that this raid be stopped,” he added. “A significant withdrawal has already begun this week and will continue into next week,” Homan continued.
Violent clashes and two deaths
Trump had sent thousands of heavily armed and masked federal officers to Minnesota. Since December 1, ICE officers have been swarming the area as part of “Operation Metro” to detain illegal immigrants.
There were numerous violent clashes with demonstrators, with two US citizens killed by federal officers in Minneapolis. After the fatal shooting of nurse Alex Pretti on January 24th, there were some horrified reactions in Trump’s Republican camp. It was the second death since unarmed driver Renée Good was shot in Minneapolis on January 7th. In the Pretti case, two CBP officers were suspended from duty; according to video footage, an ICE employee was responsible for the fatal shooting of Good.
Majority of US citizens oppose deployment of ICE officers in cities
It was previously known that around 60 percent of US citizens oppose the deployment of immigration officers to American cities. In a survey conducted by the AP news agency and the polling institute Norc, voters in particular who were not affiliated with a party showed increased discomfort with Trump’s actions. While in March 2025 37 percent of them were satisfied with the president’s immigration policy, this share has now fallen to 23 percent.
The poll came last week at a time when the nation’s eyes were on Minneapolis, where Trump let thousands of heavily armed and masked federal agents roam the city to detain illegal immigrants.
