Tunisian and Serbian officials met in Belgrade to mark 70 years of diplomatic relations and expand economic, agricultural, and technological cooperation, according to official reports from the Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Tunis Afrique Presse (TAP). Mohamed Ben Ayed, Tunisia’s Secretary of State to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad, held formal bilateral talks with Damjan Jovic, Serbia’s State Secretary for Bilateral Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Bilateral Talks Mark 70 Years of Diplomatic Ties
The high-level meeting took place on the sidelines of events celebrating the 65th anniversary of the first Non-Aligned Movement conference, hosted in Belgrade on August 31 and September 1, according to TAP. Both government representatives highlighted the milestone of seven decades of formal diplomatic relations between Tunis and Belgrade. According to the Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Damjan Jovic emphasized the strategic importance of Tunisia’s active participation in the high-level Belgrade gathering for strengthening bilateral ties.
Expanding Economic and Technological Cooperation
During the discussions, Mohamed Ben Ayed and Damjan Jovic stressed the necessity of increasing mutual state visits and deepening political dialogue to navigate contemporary global challenges, as reported by TAP. The two officials identified several sectors primed for expanded economic exchange and technical cooperation. These targeted areas include agriculture, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence, and others.
Upcoming Cultural and International Exhibitions
Tunisia confirmed plans for robust participation in upcoming international events hosted in Serbia. According to the Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mohamed Ben Ayed detailed Tunisia’s intention to secure a prominent presence at EXPO 2027 Belgrade, scheduled to run from May 15 to August 15, 2027. Additionally, Tunisia will participate as the guest of honor at the Belgrade International Book Fair, which takes place from October 23 to 31, 2026.
Commitment to Multilateralism and International Coordination
The diplomatic meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their shared dedication to multilateral diplomacy. According to TAP, the two state secretaries expressed a mutual commitment to the principles of the United Nations Charter and the foundational tenets of the Non-Aligned Movement. The officials also exchanged perspectives on regional and international issues, agreeing to strengthen coordination across multilateral international bodies.
