Earlier that evening, a physical altercation occurred at a hotel where Shakur and Knight allegedly struck the nephew of the later defendant. Both the uncle and nephew belonged to a Southern California gang engaged in a rivalry with the group associated with Suge Knight. Motivated by retaliation, the defendant allegedly procured a weapon and handed it to the men in the back seat of the white Cadillac to open fire on Shakur and Knight.
