Molly the Sea Turtle Set for Release After 22 Years at Dingle Aquarium

A loggerhead sea turtle named Molly, who has resided at Dingle Oceanworld Aquarium in County Kerry for over two decades, is preparing to return to the Atlantic Ocean. After washing ashore with severe injuries in 2004, Molly spent 22 years in rehabilitation before being deemed fit for release.

Rescue and Rehabilitation Journey

Molly was found on a beach in Castlegregory in 2004 with significant trauma to both flippers, believed to be the result of a shark attack. Aquarium staff provided immediate care and identified her as a loggerhead sea turtle. Due to the extent of her injuries, her survival in the wild was initially considered uncertain, leading to long-term expert care at the facility.

Over the years, Molly became a beloved resident and an ambassador for marine conservation at Dingle Oceanworld. Her story highlighted the challenges faced by sea turtles and the importance of rehabilitation efforts.
