Apple TV+, Netflix, and PBS have announced a slate of new literary-to-screen adaptations, featuring high-profile casting for projects including Guilty Creatures, The Portrait of a Lady, Enigma Variations, and This Summer Will Be Different.

Apple TV+ Greenlights Guilty Creatures

Apple TV+ has officially ordered Guilty Creatures, a series based on the book by Mikita Brottman. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show stars Lewis Pullman and Julia Garner as two "God-fearing" lovers in Florida whose lives are irrevocably altered by a murder and the subsequent 18-year aftermath of the crime. Stuart Zicherman, known for his work on American Sports Story, serves as showrunner. The production features a broad executive producer team including Craig Gillespie, Sarah DeLappe, Annie Marter, Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements, and Alissa Bachner.

PBS and BBC Adapt The Portrait of a Lady

Production is currently underway in the U.K., Hungary, and Croatia for a new adaptation of Henry James’ The Portrait of a Lady, a joint venture between PBS Masterpiece and the BBC. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the cast includes Bill Nighy, Nell Tiger Free, Gemma Arterton, Jim Sturgess, and Miranda Richardson. The narrative follows Isabel Archer (Free), an American who travels to Europe and becomes entangled in the schemes of Madame Merle (Arterton) and Gilbert Osmond (Sturgess). Nighy and Richardson are set to portray Mr. and Mrs. Touchett.

Netflix Expands Enigma Variations Cast

Netflix has added to the ensemble of Enigma Variations, a limited series based on the novel by André Aciman, the author of Call Me By Your Name. Deadline confirms that Riley Keough, Devon Terrell, Nicholas Podany, and Carl Clemons-Hopkins have joined previously announced leads Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Alicia Vikander. The story tracks the life of Paul (Taylor-Johnson) over a ten-year span as his identity is shaped by various romantic partners. Amanda Kate Shuman is the showrunner for the project.

Sophie Nélisse Joins This Summer Will Be Different

Netflix is also moving forward with an adaptation of Carley Fortune’s This Summer Will Be Different, with French Canadian actress Sophie Nélisse joining the cast. According to Deadline, the series is scheduled to film in Prince Edward Island and Toronto later this summer. The show, helmed by showrunners Dane Clark and Linsey Stewart, focuses on a young woman’s romantic journey, specifically her relationship with her best friend’s brother.
