Operation Bluebird, a startup founded by former Twitter chief legal officer Stephen Coates, has launched a new social media platform called Twitter.now, utilizing the classic brand name and a Google Gemini-backed fact-checking tool named Vera, according to reporting by Ars Technica. The platform emerges amidst an ongoing federal trademark dispute with Elon Musk’s X Corp.
The service debuted online under the domain twitter.now, featuring a white bird logo on a blue background alongside familiar features including replies and retweets, as reported by Blick. The launch follows Elon Musk’s 2022 acquisition of the original platform and its subsequent rebranding to x.com. According to Ars Technica, Operation Bluebird argues that X effectively abandoned its rights to the Twitter name, the word “tweet,” and the associated bird logo when it dropped the branding.
Federal Court Proceedings and Trademark Standing
X Corp. filed a motion before a federal judge in Delaware seeking to enjoin the launch of the new platform, according to court documents cited by Ars Technica. During an April court hearing, U.S. District Judge Colm Connolly indicated that X may have relinquished its intellectual property rights to the term “tweet,” the bird logo, and potentially the Twitter name itself, though a formal written ruling remains pending, as reported by Ars Technica and Frankfurter Rundschau.
Despite the lack of a final written judicial decision, Coates proceeded with the launch of the service. Trademark attorney Josh Gerben told Ars Technica that while Operation Bluebird’s legal argument holds foundational merit, the final outcome of the litigation remains open, and he anticipates continued resistance from X Corp.
The platform explicitly disclaims any corporate affiliation with X Corp. Access to the early-stage service currently requires a 20-dollar founding member fee to secure a preferred username during the early access phase, according to reports from Ars Technica and The Verge.
Integration of AI-Powered Fact-Checking
Twitter.now incorporates an automated verification system named Vera, powered by Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence architecture. According to Ars Technica, the system analyzes every published post in real-time. Coates has tested the mechanism by intentionally posting demonstrably false claims to evaluate the software’s detection capabilities.
Coates stated that the platform aims to provide an alternative digital environment focused on reducing algorithmic amplification of viral misinformation, utilizing the guiding principle of prioritizing speech independence over guaranteed content reach.
