Two Israeli Soldiers Killed in Hebron Checkpoint Shooting

Two Israeli soldiers were killed and three other people were wounded Friday morning when two Palestinian gunmen opened fire at a checkpoint near the West Bank city of Hebron. The Israel Defense Forces identified the slain soldiers as Staff Sergeant Ron Yonatan Roytman and Sergeant Yuval Shai Svilem. The attack unfolded at approximately 7:15 a.m. local time near the Judea Junction, where first responders treated multiple casualties before transporting them to hospitals in Jerusalem.

The two attackers were killed by Israeli forces at the scene following a 20-minute gun battle, according to military officials. The IDF confirmed that the suspects’ vehicle contained a large quantity of ammunition, an M16 rifle, and a handgun. Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir stated during a situational assessment that the rapid response prevented a larger tragedy, adding that investigators are working to determine whether the gunmen belonged to a local cell or a wider organization.

Netanyahu Orders Full West Bank Lockdown and Hebron Evacuations

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Friday that he ordered the military to cordon off Hebron and prepare for a comprehensive lockdown across the occupied West Bank. Netanyahu said authorities would evacuate residents from the specific neighborhood where the attackers lived ahead of a house-to-house sweep for weapons. “Our first step will be to demolish this site and completely transform it,” Netanyahu said, linking the security measures to the upcoming national election on Tuesday.

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich visited the scene and called for a comprehensive military campaign in the West Bank to dismantle the Palestinian Authority, collect weapons, and eliminate terrorists, comparing the proposed operations to campaigns in Gaza and Lebanon. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir similarly urged the dismantling of the Palestinian governing body, declaring that the territory could not maintain a “state of terror.”

Palestinian Officials Condemn Collective Punishment and Forced Displacement

Mustafa Barghouti, founder and leader of the Palestinian National Initiative, condemned the complete closure of the territory as an act of collective punishment. Barghouti stated that plans to clear neighborhoods in Hebron represented an alarming escalation in forced displacement and a flagrant violation of international law.

Human rights advocates and political analysts noted that the shooting occurred during the annual Palestinian olive harvesting season, a period marked by heightened friction and settler violence. According to United Nations figures, at least 160 Israeli settler attacks linked to the harvest were recorded in the first two weeks of October alone, frequently occurring under the protection or with the participation of Israeli forces.

IDF Launches Counterterrorism Operations Across West Bank

The Israel Defense Forces and Israel Border Police launched sweeping counterterrorism operations across the Hebron area and neighboring towns following the shooting. Military spokespersons reported that around 70 wanted individuals had been apprehended across the West Bank over the preceding week. Lt.-Gen. Zamir ordered additional troop reinforcements to the Central Command as operations continued under high alert ahead of the national vote.

Security services remain on heightened alert as investigators probe the background of the attackers, whose identities were not immediately released following the morning clash. The wider military cordon remains in place around Hebron and Halhul as security forces execute house-to-house searches.
