OpenAI Rehires Thinking Machines Founders Amidst Controversy

OpenAI, the company behind the widely popular ChatGPT, has announced the return of Barret Zoph and Luke Metz, co-founders of the AI laboratory Thinking Machines. This move comes shortly after Zoph’s departure from Thinking Machines, a company they established in late 2024 alongside OpenAI’s former Chief Technology Officer, Mira Murati. The re-acquisition of these key figures represents a important win for OpenAI, especially following the recent loss of its VP of research, Jerry Tworek.

The circumstances surrounding Zoph’s exit from Thinking Machines are currently under scrutiny. Initial reports on X, from technology reporter Kylie Robison, indicated Zoph was terminated for “unethical conduct.” Sources close to Thinking Machines allege that Zoph shared confidential company details with competitors. However, OpenAI CEO of applications, Fidji Simo, stated in a memo to staff that OpenAI does not share the same concerns regarding Zoph’s conduct as previously expressed by Murati. OpenAI has not publicly detailed the nature of its internal assessment.

Zoph reportedly informed Thinking Machines CEO murati of his potential departure on Monday, leading to his termination on Thursday. Sam Schoenholz, another member of the Thinking Machines team, is also returning to OpenAI.

This personnel shift highlights the competitive landscape within the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence sector. The return of Zoph and Metz provides OpenAI with valuable expertise as it continues to develop and refine its AI technologies, including the ChatGPT platform. The situation underscores the importance of intellectual property protection and the complexities of navigating personnel matters within high-growth technology companies.

The story is still developing, and further details regarding the allegations and OpenAI’s internal review may emerge.
