ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Michigan football program has announced the hiring of Tyler Stockton as its new safeties coach, effective promptly . Head Coach Kyle Whittingham confirmed the appointment on Monday, January 5, 2026, bringing aboard a coach wiht 12 years of experience and a rising reputation in college football.

A Proven Track Record of Defensive Success

Stockton joins the Wolverines after two seasons (2024-25) as the Co-Defensive Coordinator and safeties coach at Boise State University . during his tenure, the Broncos consistently ranked among the top defenses in pass coverage, allowing just 175.6 passing yards per game and recording 14 interceptions .

From Ball State to Ann arbor

Prior to boise State, Stockton spent five seasons (2019-23) at Ball State University, ultimately serving as Assistant Head Coach. He played a pivotal role in the Cardinals’ historic 2020 season, leading them to their first Mid-American Conference (MAC) title in over two decades and their first-ever bowl victory . under his leadership, Ball State’s defence achieved a top-25 ranking in both total defense (21st) and rushing defense (20th) during his final season.

Stockton began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of Connecticut (UConn) in 2014 and 2015. He then held various roles at Western Illinois University from 2016 to 2018, including Defensive Coordinator.

Before transitioning to coaching, Stockton was a student-athlete at the University of Notre Dame, playing on the defensive line from 2009 to 2013 and contributing to a team that reached the 2013 BCS National Championship Game . He earned two degrees from Notre Dame before briefly working in corporate finance.

Recognized Among College Football’s Rising Stars

Stockton’s coaching prowess has garnered notable recognition. He has been a three-time nominee for the Broyles Award (2020, 2022-23), which honors the nation’s top assistant coach . He was also named to the american Football Coaches Association (AFCA) 35 Under 35 List in 2021 and recognized by ESPN as one of its 45 minority coaches under the age of 45 in 2022 .

Developing NFL Talent

Throughout his career, Stockton has demonstrated an ability to develop players for the next level, having helped four athletes reach the NFL, including two who were drafted.
