Operation Northern Lights Recovers 43 Missing Children in North Florida

The U.S. Marshals Service, alongside numerous law enforcement partners, successfully completed a missing child operation in December, recovering 43 critically missing children from 14 counties across North Florida.

Operation Northern Lights involved a comprehensive task force of federal, state, and local government agencies, plus social services, medical professionals, and non-governmental organizations. Two weeks of planning and coordination led to an initiative focused on recovering or safely locating the most at-risk youth. The U.S. marshals Service defines “critically missing” children as those facing risks like violent crime, substance abuse, sexual exploitation, crime exposure, or domestic violence.

This marks the first operation of this scale in Northern Florida. Over 80 personnel from 25 agencies – including law enforcement, social services, attorneys’ offices, and non-profits – collaborated to bring these children home. The operation focused on three key goals: recovering missing youth, providing essential services like appropriate placement, and deterring crimes that exploit vulnerable children.

Northern Lights resulted in 9 arrests and may lead to further charges related to human trafficking, child endangerment, and custodial interference.Recovered children were found not only in North Florida but also in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Louisiana.

“This was the most prosperous missing child operation ever conducted in Northern Florida. Thanks to the dedication of the U.S. Marshals and our partners, 43 endangered children are now home safe for the holidays,” said Greg Leljedal, Acting U.S. Marshal for the Northern District of Florida. “The children recovered ranged in age from 1 to 17. This operation wasn’t just about finding the children; it was also about providing immediate physical and psychological care to help them.”
