Holiday travel Disrupted by Weather and System Issues

Travelers across the united States experienced delays at major airports during the busy holiday weekend. Winter weather disrupted airline schedules, and software issues temporarily grounded a popular plane model after Thanksgiving.

As of Sunday morning,FlightAware reported 1,815 inbound and outbound flight delays across the U.S., along with 490 flight cancellations. Airports in Chicago, New York city, Boston, Des Moines, Minneapolis, and Detroit were especially affected.

There was also a rail disruption in Providence, Rhode Island. A fire broke out under three Amtrak train cars with passengers. The Providence Fire Department said firefighters put out the fire and moved the train cars. Thankfully, no one was hurt. CBS News contacted Amtrak for more information about delays but hasn’t received a response yet.

A strong snowstorm in the Midwest and Great Lakes areas first caused air travel problems after the Thanksgiving holiday. The National Weather service issued numerous winter storm warnings and advisories from Montana to Ohio. Forecasters warned that airport delays and slow traffic were likely,especially where snowfall rates exceeded one inch per hour.

Northern Iowa received over 8 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service. by Saturday night, over 1,400 flights were canceled at Chicago airports due to the winter storm.
