Dr. Edith Ponce Alquicira assumed the rectorship of the Iztapalapa Unit of the Metropolitan Autonomous University (UAM) for the period 2026-2030 with the commitment to lead a direction focused on the community, with a strategic, humanistic and inclusive vision.

At the inauguration ceremony, he highlighted that the UAM-I has consolidated itself, over more than five decades, as a national benchmark in teaching, study and innovation, thanks to its departmental academic model and the close relationship between research and teaching, being a “living laboratory of knowledge” that contributes to the training of more than 51 thousand graduates.

He noted that his administration will align with the Strategic Agenda for Institutional Management 2025–2030. Among the actions to be carried out will be the strengthening of collaborative work, attention to university well-being, educational innovation, the promotion of multidisciplinary research and transparency in the use of resources.

In his message, he highlighted the importance of consolidating a culture of peace, inclusion, equity and sustainable development, in addition to addressing the challenges derived from the social, technological and environmental transformations that higher education faces.

Dr. Ponce Alquicira called on the entire university community to work together and co-responsibly to strengthen school life, consolidate the achievements made and build a sustainable future.

The general rector of the UAM, Dr. Gustavo Pacheco López, highlighted the relevance of this university headquarters as one of the most solid pillars of educators, and the challenges that will mark its course in the coming years.

He reiterated his teaching excellence, supported by strong indicators, by indicating that the House open to time It is the Mexican university with the highest proportion of permanent professors assigned to the National System of Researchers (SNII), with 36 percent at the institutional level, a figure that in the Iztapalapa Unit rises to 47 percent, which positions almost half of its faculty as a national and international reference.

According to the Rector General, the UAM almost triples the national and Ibero-American average in proportion of doctoral enrollment, representing 2.7 percent of the total, while in this Unit, the figure reaches almost 5 percent, a level not recorded in any other higher education institution in the country.

This intellectual capital, he added, has been key in the training of more than 218 thousand graduates, of which more than 48 thousand belong to the Iztapalapa Unit, who contribute to social transformation from different sectors and regions.

Dr. Pacheco López recognized that priority challenges persist, including increasing the demand and admission of applicants at the undergraduate level, improving terminal efficiency, taking advantage of and expanding the available infrastructure, optimizing the use of high-performance experimental equipment and, centrally, strengthening harmonious coexistence between its various sectors to consolidate the community fabric, to which is added the process of generational replacement of academic staff to strengthen the substantive functions of the University.

When addressing the incoming Rector, she highlighted her career and training as a Biological Pharmaceutical Chemistry, her doctorate in the United Kingdom and her distinction as a member of the SNII, qualities that, she said, accredit her to assume this responsibility, coupled with her institutional commitment and her management capacity, which position her as a leader capable of leading a large, complex and diverse community.

Dr. Verónica Medina Bañuelos, outgoing rector, recounted her administration and thanked her entire work team, the community that makes up the Iztapalapa Unit, “characterized by its critical capacity, tradition, link with society, public vocation and solid pillars.” He assured that this new rectorate “remains in good hands to be led with responsibility, sensitivity and vision of the future.”

For her part, the president of the UAM Board of Directors, Dr. María del Rosario Cárdenas Elizalde, mentioned that the renewal of administrative procedures gives continuity to the operation of the Unit and opens opportunities to innovate perspectives that allow strengthening and advancing university life.

Present at the event were members of the Board of Directors of this university, the rectors of the UAM Units, university officials, Division directors, members of the community of this campus and the mayor of Iztapalapa, Aleida Alavez Ruiz.
