Uber and Rivian Partner to Deploy Up to 50,000 Autonomous Robotaxis
Uber is forging ahead with its ambitions in the autonomous vehicle space, announcing a significant partnership with Rivian to deploy up to 50,000 fully autonomous robotaxis on its platform. The collaboration aims to bring driverless ride-hailing services to cities across North America and Europe, beginning with Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Partnership Details and Investment
The partnership involves Rivian providing its R2 electric SUVs for Uber’s robotaxi fleet. Uber will invest over $1 billion in the project, starting with an initial investment of $300 million. A total commitment of $1.25 billion is planned by 2031, contingent upon Rivian meeting specific milestones in the development of its autonomous driving systems Rivian.
Deployment Timeline and Locations
Rivian intends to launch the first phase of the project by deploying 10,000 autonomous R2 vehicles in Miami and San Francisco by 2028. If successful, Uber plans to expand the service to at least 25 cities across North America and Europe by 2031 MotorTrend.
Technology Integration
Beyond the vehicle supply, Uber is also leveraging technology from Nvidia for its driverless software. This partnership extends to other automakers as well, including Lucid, Volkswagen, Nissan, Zoox and Stellantis, all of whom are providing vehicles to Uber powered by Nvidia technology MotorTrend.
Potential Challenges
Whereas the partnership presents significant opportunities, potential challenges exist. One concern revolves around the R2’s door mechanism, as the vehicle wasn’t initially designed for frequent use in a robotaxi setting where passengers might forget to close the doors after exiting. Dedicated autonomous taxis often feature self-closing doors, a feature not currently standard on the R2 MotorTrend.
