UCSC Arboretum puts corpse flower bud on display

The UC Santa Cruz Arboretum opened its display of a developing corpse flower bud on Wednesday, welcoming visitors during regular hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. as they wait for the plant to bloom, according to the arboretum.

Arboretum plans extended hours for bloom

The timing of the bloom has not been announced by the arboretum. When the massive inflorescence finally opens, the facility plans to extend its operating hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for that specific day. Because the bloom lasts for only a short time, officials encourage visitors to check the arboretum’s social media channels and email updates for immediate opening announcements.

Garden Advocates and higher-level arboretum members will gain access to a special after-hours viewing on the evening the flower opens. Admission is free for members and UC Santa Cruz students. Ticket prices are set at $13 for adults, $10 for seniors aged 65 and older, and $7 for youth between 4 and 17 years old.

Botanical Characteristics of Amorphophallus Titanum

Known scientifically as Amorphophallus titanum, the corpse flower represents the largest unbranched inflorescence in the plant kingdom. The U.S. Botanic Garden notes that the plant boasts a powerful odor often compared to rotting flesh and blooms for just two to three days once every two to three years. Individual blooms can reach up to 9 feet tall.
