Uganda Reverses Invictus Games Withdrawal After Reassurance from King Charles

Uganda has reversed its decision to withdraw from Prince Harry’s Invictus Games after military leaders received direct reassurance from Buckingham Palace that King Charles supports the country’s participation. According to the sources, Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, confirmed that the East African nation will resume preparations for the multisport event scheduled to take place in Birmingham.

Social Media Announcement Sparks Initial Withdrawal

The reversal comes just days after General Kainerugaba announced via social media that Uganda was pulling out of the tournament. At the time, the military chief stated on X that he wanted to avoid any action that could be “construed as being opposed to His Majesty King Charles III,” according to the sources.

Formal Letter Clarifies Royal Status of Sussexes

The initial withdrawal coincided with a formal letter sent on behalf of the King to UK senior government and military officials. That document clarified the status of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, reiterating that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle remain private citizens and do not carry out official royal engagements.

Direct Phone Call Resolves Diplomatic Friction

However, the diplomatic friction dissolved following a telephone conversation between General Kainerugaba and Sir Clive Alderton, the principal private secretary to the King and Queen. Sir Clive told the military chief that King Charles was moved by his sensitive consideration of the monarch’s opinion. Sir Clive added that the King has “no problem” with Uganda’s involvement and encouraged the military chief to proceed with preparations.

General Kainerugaba acknowledged the communication, stating that the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) appreciated the clarity provided by Buckingham Palace. Period.”
