Spanish Railway Strike Confirmed for February 9-11 as negotiations with Transport Ministry Fail
Madrid,Spain – February 6,2026 – The railway sector of FeSMC-UGT has confirmed it will proceed with planned strikes on February 9th,10th,and 11th,following unsuccessful negotiations with the Ministry of Transport. The union announced the decision after a series of intensive meetings held between February 4th and 6th failed to yield satisfactory commitments from the government.
UGT representatives stated they presented the Ministry with a series of “concrete and realistic measures” designed to address long-standing issues within the Spanish railway system. These demands encompassed improvements to daily operations, increased investment in infrastructure and employment, and crucially, enhanced railway safety and improved working conditions for railway personnel.
Despite acknowledging some progress during the discussions, the union expressed deep dissatisfaction with the Ministry’s response. According to UGT,the proposals put forth by the Ministry were deemed “insufficient and distant” from the actual needs of the sector. A key point of contention was the lack of “firm commitments or concrete guarantees,” alongside the absence of a clear timeline for implementing necessary changes.
“we continue with negotiations seeking to reach an agreement that represents real and tangible progress,” a UGT spokesperson affirmed. “Our priority remains improving the working and professional conditions of our workforce, as well as guaranteeing a safe and quality railway service for all citizens.”
However, the union emphasized that, absent significant agreements, clear commitments, and sufficient guarantees, the strike action will proceed as scheduled. Passengers and freight operators are advised to anticipate significant disruptions to rail services during the strike period. further updates will be provided as negotiations continue.
