UK Announces £53 Million Energy Bill Support Amidst Middle East Crisis

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced a £53 million support package to alleviate the burden of rising energy costs on British households, particularly those reliant on heating oil. The move comes as the UK grapples with the economic fallout from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, specifically the war between the US-Israeli alliance and Iran.

Support for Heating Oil Users

The support package is specifically targeted at the 1.5 million UK households that use heating oil, a sector not protected by the energy price cap applied to gas and electricity. Unlike gas and electricity consumers, heating oil users have experienced sharp price increases since the outbreak of the conflict . Some customers have reported costs doubling.

The £53 million will be distributed to vulnerable households, with local councils responsible for determining eligibility and allocating funds . In England, the funding will be channeled through the Crisis and Resilience Fund, starting April 1st, replacing the Household Support Fund. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will receive direct allocations to their devolved governments, with the expectation that the funds will be used to support vulnerable households .

Northern Ireland is set to receive £17 million, England £27 million, Scotland £4.6 million, and Wales £3.8 million .

Government Response to Strait of Hormuz Crisis

The Prime Minister addressed concerns regarding the security of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route for oil and gas currently disrupted by the conflict. Starmer stated the UK “will not be drawn into the wider war” but is collaborating with allies on a plan to reopen the Strait . This response comes despite demands from former US President Donald Trump for the UK to deploy Royal Navy warships to secure the route .

Repatriation of UK Nationals

The government is also focused on repatriating approximately 92,000 UK nationals stranded in the Middle East, utilizing both government and commercial flights .

Potential Fuel Duty Freeze

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband has indicated the government may halt planned increases to fuel duty if the conflict in the Middle East persists into the latter half of the year .

Chancellor to Detail Support Package

Chancellor Rachel Reeves is expected to provide further details of the support package next week .
