UK and France Prepare Paratroopers for Potential Ukraine Peacekeeping Role
British and French paratroopers have finalized preparations for a potential peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, coinciding with the fourth anniversary of the full-scale Russian invasion. The joint exercises, designated Exercise Orion, involved approximately 2,000 personnel and were designed as a readiness evaluation for rapid NATO deployments worldwide .
Joint Military Exercises
The nine-day operation, held in Brittany, France, saw over 600 troops from the UK’s 16th Air Assault Brigade—specifically the 2nd Battalion The Parachute Brigade—deploy alongside two French battlegroups from the 11e Brigade Parachutiste . Initial phases involved covert insertions by British Pathfinders and the French Groupe Commando Parachutiste, focusing on neutralizing simulated enemy anti-aircraft systems and designating landing zones .
The maneuvers were coordinated from a French command center at the Orleans-Bricy airbase and aimed to test “support a NATO ally tackling an insurgency and the threat of invasion” . The drills included practicing landing from aircraft and organizing ambushes and offensive actions, with particular attention paid to modern technologies .
Commitment to Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that both the United Kingdom and France have committed to deploying 5,000 personnel to Ukraine as part of security guarantees . British Prime Minister Keir Starmer previously indicated that London and Paris were prepared to lead a peacekeeping force should a truce be reached between Moscow and Kiev .
UK Military Capacity
However, questions have been raised regarding Britain’s capacity to fulfill this commitment, as the country’s army has been reduced to its lowest strength in over 200 years – approximately 70,000 troops . To deploy a fully equipped military force to Ukraine, London may need to withdraw units from Estonia and Cyprus .
Peacekeeping as a Guarantee
A foreign peacekeeping contingent is viewed as a potential guarantee for compliance with any peace agreement reached between Russia and Ukraine. Russian authorities have indicated a willingness to discuss the deployment of foreign military personnel in Ukraine following the conclusion of hostilities.
