UK Faces Heightened Energy Risk with Low Gas Reserves Amid Middle East Tensions
Britain is entering a period of increased energy vulnerability as natural gas storage levels remain low and global supplies face pressure from escalating conflicts in the Middle East. Current reserves are sufficient for only a limited period, raising concerns about potential supply shocks and price increases.
Current Gas Storage Levels
As of March 9, 2026, the UK holds approximately 6,700 gigawatt hours (GWh) of gas in storage, equivalent to roughly 1.5 days of winter demand . While National Gas, the transmission operator, states these levels are broadly typical for this time of year and comparable to last year, the UK’s limited storage capacity leaves it exposed to disruptions.
UK Gas Supply Sources
The UK’s gas supply is diverse, consisting of:
- The UK Continental Shelf
- Norway (via pipelines – the leading supplier)
- Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) from the US, Norway and Qatar
- Interconnectors with continental Europe
- Gas storage (a relatively small component)
Britain’s total gas storage capacity is around 18,000 GWh, fluctuating throughout the year as reserves are drawn down in winter and replenished in summer .
Middle East Conflict and Global LNG Supply
Escalating tensions in the Middle East are impacting global energy routes and driving up gas prices. Some LNG tankers are altering their routes, heading towards Asia, which is increasing costs for the UK . The conflict threatens approximately 20 percent of the world’s LNG transport through the Strait of Hormuz .
Increased Reliance on Imports
The UK is increasingly reliant on imported gas as domestic production declines . This dependence, coupled with limited storage, makes the country more vulnerable to supply disruptions and price volatility than many European nations .
Centrica’s LNG Investment
British Gas-owner Centrica is investing in energy infrastructure, recently acquiring one of the UK’s largest LNG facilities for £1.7 billion, expanding its control over the country’s energy supplies .
