UK Couples Exploiting Legal Loophole for Embryo Selection

Couples undergoing IVF in the UK are utilizing a legal loophole to rank their embryos based on genetic predictions of traits like IQ, height, and health, according to recent reports.

The controversial screening technique, which scores embryos based on their DNA, is not permitted within UK fertility clinics. Critics raise both scientific and ethical concerns, citing the unproven nature of the method. Though, patients are leveraging data protection laws to request their embryos’ raw genetic data and sending it abroad for analysis, aiming to increase the chances of having children with desired characteristics.

Dr. Cristina Hickman, a senior embryologist and founder of Avenues fertility clinic in London, highlights that rapid advancements in embryo screening and the emergence of US companies offering polygenic screening have created “legal and ethical confusion” for clinics. She recently brought this issue to the attention of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) in a letter.

Herasight, a US company charging $50,000 (£37,000) for assessing an unlimited number of embryos, has confirmed working with couples undergoing IVF at UK clinics. The company is not currently believed to be violating any regulations.

Avenues clinic reports that two patients are independently pursuing HerasightS services, without the clinic’s direct involvement. One patient, a 29-year-old woman, stated that she and her husband hope to minimize the risk of diseases like diabetes and select embryos with high predicted IQ scores.

“People are willing to spend significant money and endure emotional hardship to provide their children with even a slightly improved start in life,” the patient explained.
