UK RAF Typhoons Extend Defensive Operations to Bahrain Amidst Middle East Tensions
British Royal Air Force (RAF) Typhoon jets have begun conducting air defense patrols over Bahrain, extending the UK’s defensive operations in the Middle East. This move comes as the conflict between the US-Israel and Iran enters its second week, with increasing concerns over regional stability and threats to commercial shipping lanes.
Expanding UK Air Defense Presence
Two of the four RAF Typhoon jets initially deployed to Qatar have been specifically allocated to assist Bahrain in intercepting incoming drones. This expansion of operations, alongside European allies, also includes continued defensive flights over Cyprus, following an Iranian-made drone strike on the RAF Akrotiri base on March 1st . British jets are also patrolling the skies over Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar .
Bahrain Faces Increasing Drone and Missile Attacks
Bahraini officials report intercepting a total of 190 incoming drones and 114 missiles since the start of the conflict, primarily using its own air defenses . However, the country has expressed an urgent need for Short Range Air Defence systems to effectively counter the drone threat. Earlier this week, an Iranian drone struck Bahrain’s airport fuel storage tanks . Bahrain has also reported the highest number of casualties from a single strike among Gulf nations, with 23 civilians injured, including four children, on March 9th .
UK Military Activity and Personnel Deployment
The UK military has been actively involved in defensive operations in the region. Defence Secretary John Healey announced that the UK has logged over 300 pilot flying hours in the past 13 days . Brigadier Guy Foden confirmed that air combat patrols have been flown over Jordan and the UAE, in addition to sorties over Qatar . 400 additional air defense personnel have been deployed to bolster defenses in the Eastern Mediterranean .
Regional Concerns and Diplomatic Efforts
The increased military activity coincides with diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper landed in Saudi Arabia on Thursday amid ongoing concerns about Iranian threats to the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global commerce . Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer emphasized the UK’s commitment to de-escalation, stating that the RAF Typhoons’ extended actions to Bahrain demonstrate this commitment .
