Ukraine to Release Commemorative Gold Coin Celebrating 35th Anniversary of Independence, Updated 200 Hryvnia Notes in Circulation

The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) is set to release a new commemorative gold coin marking the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence in August 2026. Simultaneously, updated 200 hryvnia banknotes featuring the patriotic slogan “Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the Heroes!” are currently being circulated.

New 35th Anniversary Independence Coin

The NBU announced plans to issue a 900-carat gold coin dedicated to the anniversary of Ukraine’s independence. The coin will be part of the “Ukrainian State” series and will have a limited mintage of up to 1,000 copies. It will have a diameter of 32 mm and a weight of 31.1 grams of pure gold.

Updated 200 Hryvnia Banknotes

Beginning February 25, 2026, the NBU introduced modified 200 hryvnia banknotes into circulation. The updated notes feature the slogan “Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the Heroes!” on the upper right side of the reverse. The design and security elements otherwise remain consistent with the 2019 model of the 200 hryvnia banknote.

The NBU is distributing the modified banknotes to Ukrainian banks, cash collection companies, and cash processing companies to ensure widespread availability. Existing 200 hryvnia banknotes of the previous model remain legal tender and will continue to circulate alongside the updated versions without restriction.

Broader Rollout of Updated Banknotes

The introduction of these updated 200 hryvnia notes is part of a larger initiative that began in August 2024, marking the 33rd anniversary of Ukraine’s independence. Modified banknotes with the patriotic slogan have already been released in denominations of 50, 100, 500, and 1,000 hryvnias. The NBU plans to announce the release of updated 100 hryvnia banknotes at a later date.

Commemorative coins and updated banknotes serve not only as currency but also as cultural and historical artifacts, preserving national memory and attracting collectors due to their limited editions and potential for increased value over time.
