Shahina Waseem: The UK’s Undefeated Chilli Queen

Shahina Waseem, known as the UK Chilli Queen, has achieved an extraordinary feat in the competitive eating world: 97 consecutive wins in chilli eating competitions across the UK, USA, and Belgium as of November 2023. Her journey began unexpectedly in 2012 at the Kingston Food Festival, and has since transformed into a dedicated pursuit, even leading to the establishment of a governing body for the sport.

From Engineering to Extreme Eating

Despite a background in mechanical engineering with aeronautics – she graduated from Brunel University London in 2004 – and a career in property letting, Waseem has carved a niche for herself as a world champion chilli eater. She currently ranks second in the Official League of Fire (LOF) world ranking [2], which recognizes top competitors globally.

The Rigors of Competitive Chilli Eating

Competitive chilli eating is far from a casual pastime. Waseem describes it as an “extreme competitive sport which is not affected by age or gender.” [2] The experience is intensely painful, with sensations including burning lips and throat, ear drum pressure, muscle twitching, shaking, chills, tremors, muscle spasms, cramps, and heartburn. [2]

To prepare for competitions, where contestants may consume up to 70 chillies, Waseem focuses on lining her stomach with a substantial meal to increase its capacity. Her pre-competition routine includes milkshakes with peanut butter and banana sandwiches or cheeseburgers, even as some competitors prefer rice pudding or mashed potatoes. [1]

The physical toll can be severe, often resulting in vomiting, with participants frequently experiencing “bright red fluorescent sick.” [1] Contestants often attempt to induce vomiting after the competition to remove the capsaicin from their systems and mitigate damage to their stomach and intestines. [1]

Breaking Barriers and Building a Community

Waseem has also been a pioneer in establishing the League of Fire (LOF) in 2019, the official global governing body for competitive chilli pepper eating. [1] The LOF is working to professionalize the sport, recently securing its first official prize sponsor, ensuring monetary rewards for contestants. [1]

She has also challenged gender stereotypes within the chilli-eating community, encouraging more women to participate. [1]

Notable Achievements

Waseem’s accomplishments include defeating US champion Johnny Scoville in Guildford, UK, in 2019, and subsequently beating Dustin “Atomik Menace” Johnson in America. [2] She is also the only woman to have eaten 105 Carolina Reapers in one sitting, a feat she accomplished to raise funds for a competition trip. [2] She even has a chilli pepper named after her, the “Rose of Shahina,” cultivated in Hungary. [3]

Currently, Waseem is planning a comeback to competitive eating, aiming to reach 100 wins. [1]
